India’s “Oil of the 21st Century”: The Microchip Revolution
During the inauguration, PM Modi drew a powerful parallel between the previous century’s reliance on oil and the current century’s dependence on microchips. He emphasized that the Sanand facility is not just a factory, but a testament to India’s shift from a software-heavy economy to a global hardware powerhouse.
Key Highlights of the Micron Sanand Facility:
- Rapid Execution: The transition from the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to full commercial production was achieved in record time, following the groundbreaking in September 2023.
- Massive Investment: With a total project outlay exceeding ₹22,500 crore, this is the first proposal approved under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM).
- World-Class Infrastructure: The facility boasts nearly 500,000 square feet of cleanroom space, making it one of the largest raised-floor cleanrooms on the planet.
- Global Supply Chain: The plant will convert advanced DRAM and NAND wafers into finished memory products for international markets.
Strategic India-US Partnership
PM Modi highlighted the inauguration as a symbol of the growing India-US partnership. By securing the supply chain for chips and AI, the two nations are working to stabilize a critical sector for global humanity.
“India is ready, India is reliable, and India delivers,” the Prime Minister asserted, noting that the nation is now a competitive player in the global semiconductor ecosystem.
Semiconductor Mission 2.0: A Pan-India Ecosystem
Union Minister for Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, provided further context on the industry’s growth. Under the leadership of PM Modi:
- Electronics manufacturing has seen a sixfold growth.
- Electronics exports have surged eightfold.
- Mobile phones have climbed to the top of India’s export charts.
The “Micron Effect” is already spreading. Under Semiconductor Mission 2.0, ten major projects are currently taking shape across a corridor stretching from Sanand (Gujarat) to Noida (UP) and Assam, creating a robust domestic ecosystem where chips “Designed in India” are finally “Manufactured in India.”
