National Science Day 2026: Theme & Key Highlights

The official theme for 2026 is “Women in Science: Catalysing Viksit Bharat.” This theme underscores the vital role of women researchers, innovators, and leaders in realizing India’s vision of becoming a developed nation (Viktit Bharat) by 2047.

Major Announcements & Events

  • National Celebration: Organized by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), the event at Vigyan Bhawan featured lectures by distinguished scientists, including a focus on “Made in India” technologies for Aerospace and Defence.
  • Recognition of Talent: Dr. Shubha V. Iyenger was highlighted for developing “Drishti,” India’s first indigenous runway visibility system, for which she received the Padma Shri in 2026.
  • Launch of Initiatives: Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh launched the ANRF–Venture Centre Outreach Initiative, aimed at providing young students—especially girls—structured exposure to high-end laboratories.
  • Technology Transfer: A major highlight included the transfer of Nano Titania Technology for heritage conservation, demonstrating science’s role in preserving India’s cultural identity.

Why February 28?

Contrary to popular belief, this is not Sir C.V. Raman’s birthday. It marks the day he realized that light changes its wavelength when passing through a transparent material—a phenomenon now known as Raman Spectroscopy, used globally in medicine, forensics, and material science.
