From “Poster Boy” to FAI Prospect: The Chris Atherton Story

Chris Atherton first entered the record books in September 2022 while playing for Glenavon. At just 13 years and 329 days old, he became the youngest senior footballer in United Kingdom history. Since then, his trajectory has been steep, moving to the Chelsea Academy in July 2025 and signing his first professional contract with the Blues in October 2025.

The Allegiance Switch: A Blow for the IFA?

The switch comes as a shock to many in Belfast, as Atherton was previously a “youth ambassador” for Northern Ireland. He played a central role in the successful UK and Ireland bid to host Euro 2028, even stating at the time that he “dreamed” of representing Northern Ireland at the tournament.

However, his father, Stephen Atherton, confirmed the change on social media:

“Delighted for Christopher that this has finally gone through. Thanks to all the people at the FAI for their help and support during this process.”

Following a Familiar Path

Atherton follows a long line of players who have made the move south, including:

  • James McClean & Shane Duffy: Both became stalwarts for the Republic after switching.
  • Mark Sykes: A fellow Glenavon academy product who made the same jump.
  • Sean Moore: The West Ham prospect who recently transitioned to the Republic’s U21 side.

Northern Ireland’s “Next Gen” Still Strong

While losing Atherton is a blow, Northern Ireland’s youth pipeline remains productive. The JD Academy continues to develop high-level talent currently at Premier League clubs, including:

  • Ceadach O’Neill (Arsenal)
  • George Feeney (Tottenham)
  • Michael Forbes (West Ham, currently on loan at Northampton)
