Hallo, Deutschland: Detroit Lions Confirmed for 2026 NFL Munich Gam
The Detroit Lions are officially taking their “One Pride” roar across the Atlantic. On February 24, 2026, the NFL announced that Detroit will be a featured team in the 2026 International Series. The Lions will travel to Munich, Germany, for a regular-season clash at the iconic Allianz Arena (home of FC Bayern Munich).
This game marks Detroit’s third international trip in franchise history and their first since 2015. While the date, kickoff time, and opponent won’t be revealed until the full NFL schedule drop in May 2026, the excitement is already building for what promises to be a massive cultural event in Bavaria.
A Home Away from Home Playing in Munich is more than just a road trip for the Lions; it is the culmination of a multi-year investment. Since March 2024, Detroit has held international marketing rights in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland through the NFL’s Global Markets Program.
“We are thrilled to be playing in Munich for the 2026 season,” said Lions President & CEO Rod Wood. “Our organization has invested greatly in the German market. We are excited to finally play in front of our passionate German fans.”
The “Sun God” Returns No player is more excited for the trip than All-Pro wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown. A dual American and German citizen who speaks the language fluently, St. Brown has served as a primary NFL ambassador to the region.
His mother, Miriam, hails from Cologne, and St. Brown has frequently hosted youth football camps across Germany. For the star receiver, this game is a career milestone. He noted that playing in his mother’s home country has been a dream since he entered the league.
Building a German Fanbase The Lions have been aggressive in building a local identity in Germany. Their efforts include:
Leo Löwe: The team’s official German mascot, featuring a mane inspired by the German flag.
Watch Parties: Hosting massive events in Cologne for Detroit’s signature Thanksgiving Day games.
Youth Outreach: Launching grassroots football initiatives and streetwear collaborations with German designers like MiDNIGHT.
Munich is just one stop on a record-breaking nine-game international slate for 2026. Other games are scheduled for London, Madrid, Mexico City, Rio de Janeiro, and the first-ever regular-season game in Paris.
